Cargo

Wellington 2012

PopUp Group

Containers speak of import, transport, trading, smuggling and trafficking. They are vehicles for physical commodities, but they are also ‘cultural containers’: transporting human beings, human will and ideas. In Cargo this object is taken from its familiar context, and made devoid of content, point of origin or purpose. Afloat in the liminal space of the harbor, the container is neither fully exported nor imported, having departed but never arriving. Suspended from its journey and floating off-shore, the container becomes an isolated and elevated performer in Wellington Harbor, an environment in a constant state of flux.
