Imagine seeing performers swinging from cranes, hearing opera sung from balconies, encountering dance at a traffic light, circus at a bus stop, or a drag show in a corner store.
Adjacent to the 2021 waterfront festival, The Performance Arcade presented a city-wide programme of art and performance curated in collaboration with some of Wellington’s most exciting artists, events, and creative organisations. A vibrant celebration of art in Aotearoa NZ, this initiative marked 10 years of the Wellington festival and the first collaboration of this kind between various sectors of the capital’s creative community. WHAT IF THE CITY WAS A THEATRE? encouraged audiences to rethink the limits of public space, to take to the streets, and experience internationally acclaimed free arts performance in the places they least expected it.
