Russell Scoones

A triptych of oil barrels emit sounds that move liquid upon their surfaces. These sounds have been gathered and harvested from the waterways, harbours and people of the sea with attention given to the artist’s ancestral history of involvement in the waters surrounding and brushing against Aotearoa. Exploring themes of the sea, harbours, sailors, fathers and sons, this work tells an inter-generational story through the use of sound, composition and ‘cymatics’ - a technique used to visualize sound by projecting audio vibrations against a fluid surface.

Russell Scoones is an independent sound artist and music therapist with the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre, Auckland. His sound worlds are sourced from physical environments and shaped within inter-disciplinary contexts of performance. Recent works include Tongues of Stone Perth with choroegrapher Carol Brown in 2011 and SLIP with Touch Compass Dance Company in 2010. His sound installation works include Sound Garden for Polesden Lacey estate, Surrey (UK) and Shelf Life with Carol Brown in various international programmes, including Roma Europa (Italy) and Dance Umbrella (UK).
