The Joy Project

Wellington 2014

Binge Culture

The collective gathers from the Wellington community a range of personal accounts of joy. In this space, they will collaborate with the public to perform playful reenactments of these accounts. The space will be full of an eclectic range of versatile props and equipment such as a music player, a bicycle, a bath full of water, a wind machine, a huge red fur coat. Performers will work one-on-one with visitors to uncover and understand their intimate experiences. They will then facilitate active participation from the public in recreating these moments of joy in a ‘open air laboratory’ setting. These re-creations may spill out into the surrounding arcade and city as needed. In this accessible and non- threatening ‘play-space’ will encourage the public to unleash their innate sense of play and celebration. Spectators will be active participants and the roles of performer and spectator will be constantly reinvented.

Binge Culture has been nationally recognised as leading innovators of New Zealand theatre are a resident company at Downstage Theatre. They won three awards in the 2013 New Zealand Fringe Festival for the outdoor work The Whales: ‘ Best in Fringe’, ‘Innovation
Award’ and ‘Best Outdoor’. Other shows, Beep Test* and For Your Future Guidance were also both nominated for
Innovation, with the latter also coming runner up for the ‘Fringe of the Fringe’ award in the Auckland Fringe Festival. In 2011 we were granted a STAB commission from BATS Theatre in Wellington to create our performance, Wake Less, which went on to be selected for the New Performance Festival as one of New Zealand’s “breakthrough
works that transcend the gaps of artistic convention.”
