Birds of Paradise
Wellington 2015
Annette Elliot
The artist illuminates the façade of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa with a series of filmed poetic vignettes that fade in and out of vision. FIlmed in the McCormick Bird House in Chicago, the Scarlet ibis, Inca tern, Nicobar pigeon, and Bali mynah are not native to New Zealand. The metal identification band, the outline of a cage, the painted backdrop of a rainforest confront the viewer with the man-made artificiality of paradise. What is lost when the local is wrought into a geographic, political and cultural utopia (ou-topos “no place”)?
