Asylum
Wellington 2016
Francesca Emms and Amelia Taverner
The refugee crisis is unfolding before us and many New Zealanders will already have opinions on our place in this tragedy. The aim of ASYLUM is to get people thinking and talking about these issues on a global, local and personal scale. ASYLUM is an important, current and innovative work created by Amelia Taverner and Francesca Emms. Both artists feel strongly about the refugee crisis and this is reflected in their other work. Taverner’s Cast Aways, presented at Deep Anatomy in the Bahamas in 2015, was a powerful installation using clothing collected from shipwrecked Haitian refugee boats, which had washed up on the beach. Emms is currently working with RNZ and the Voice Arts Trust as a writing coach and dramaturg on a community art project exploring the stories of refugees living in social housing in Wellington. ASYLUM is a work that invites the public to take a couple of steps in someone else’s shoes. If participants begin to understand even a small part of the fear, frustration or confusion that people who are forced to flee their homes feel, then ASYLUM will have succeeded.
