Body Cartography with Footnote Dance NZ
"Very few performances make the present so vivid and felt as Olive Bieringa’s Action Movie [for Body Cartography Project]. A simple proposal of being guided with your eyes closed became a profound experience of my body and senses, located and dislocated in a sensuous, outdoor municipal adventure. Embodied cinema. This film was all in first person, including the performer and the watcher as the only two characters (simultaneous differing viewpoints), partners in an experiential filming complete with close ups, long shots and a sound track that John Cage would envy. Yes, death to the author, but here you have to trust the filmmaker in order to feel the film. The mundane became sublime. The footage was raw and edited in real time. I felt I was co-constructing the images. The body in present time is the action movie’s bold revelation".

The mission of BodyCartography Project is to engage with the vital materiality of the body. They create dance in urban, domestic, wild, and social landscapes. Their work is rooted in contemporary dance, somatic technique, education, socially engaged practice, and public art. They are deeply invested in the power of live performance to facilitate a re-enchantment of embodiment, relationship, and presence. Over seventeen years they have created projects across the USA, Canada, NZ, Japan, Europe, Russia and South America that range from intimate interventions in public space, to large community site pieces, and works for the stage. Honors include a Foundation for Contemporary Art grant in 2015, Twin Cities City Pages Dance Company of the Year 2013, City Pages Artists of the Year 2008, Sage Award for Outstanding Performance 2008.
Footnote NZ Dance
Footnote New Zealand Dance is a significant part of the dance experience for thousands of Kiwis. Over the past 30 years, Footnote has presented the fluid energy of dance as a real reflection of our New Zealand identity in the theatre, in schools and in the community. This is the second year that Body Cartography and Footnote NZ Dance has collaborated at the Performance Arcade
