Felt Me:
My body is wrapped in warm, white, wool. Feel me.
Your feelings felt me; fashioning this felted garment onto my body.
Felt Me was originally created during a residency at ‘Schafhof’ (‘Sheep house’), a contemporary art centre in Freising, Germany (2013). Reacting to a local felt industry which was fading; the work sought to create touching encounters that reconnected the social fabric of the community.
For Performance Arcade, Felt Me will be re-enacted in response to Wellington’s rich history with wool. Skirting, scouring and carding the raw material herself; the artist hopes to emphasise the hand-made nature of this performance work, whilst also exposing the labour of textile processes.
Considered the oldest hand-made fabric, felt has a powerful presence within performance art; with Beuys famously calling his felted works ‘warmth sculptures’.
Embracing this sensual material through performance, Felt me invites you to explore the interactions, feelings and felt that unfold through this encounter.
Madaleine is a performance artist and photographer.
Deeply fascinated by materials, she creates performances with garments fashioned from ephemeral and sculptural matter, which transform and decay.
Originally from London, Madaleine has performed/exhibited at the ICA, BAC, RCA, V&A, Saatchi Gallery, Southbank Centre, Roundhouse, National Theatre Studios and the Place. Her work has toured internationally to Barcelona, Brussels, Cologne, Freising, Helsinki, Prague, Porto and Wellington.
Madaleine’s solo performance, Sutre, represented the UK for the Extreme Costume Exhibition (2011 Prague Quadrennial), was transformed into a hologram and longlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize.
In parallel to her artistic practice, Madaleine was a lecturer on the BA Performance Arts and MA Scenography courses at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (2012-2018).
She has published her practice in the Critical Costume edition of Scene (Intellect) and the ‘On the Maternal’ issue of Performance Research.
Madaleine has recently moved to Wellington to pursue a practice-based PhD at the College of Creative Arts, Massey University.
