Anna Berndtson
Water is a limited resource, in a closed system, in the water cycle. Traipsing from the water's edge to the top of a container, the artist struggles to maintain the flow of a waterfall using the labour of the human body. This seemingly impossible task recreates a water cycle through repetitive processes enacted wtihin the architecture of PA2020.
The Swedish artist Anna Berndtson grew up in the Swedish harbour town, Malmö and spent her summers fishing for pike in the lakes of Småland. Her close and loving relationship with - as well as her deep respect for - water and its natural powers is reflected in the performance Cycle.
Anna Berndtson is a Swedish performance artist working foremost with long duration live performance art. The public is essential in her work, with their presence playing an important part of the live experience. Being present over several hours or even over several days is the main challenge in this art form. Anna constantly renews her ideas and ways of working, using new materials and subject areas but the main constant that remains in all work is her body and own perception, which are placed in the centre of her work. The reduction of the visual image is fundamental in her performances, videos and photographs.
