Whispering Auckland
Auckland 2011
VoLume (Courtney Norman, Fiona Priest)
The shipping container was filled with hanging white umbrellas. Lighting caught these forms making them appear as clouds. Upon closer investigation, the visitor could hear sound coming from each umbrella – a mixture of whispered answers to the questions “What do you like most about Auckland?” “Where is the best place to go when it is sunny and when it rains?” Accompanied by the sound of rain, these words filled the container with their stories, combining together to form a low sussuruss like the wind. A space of quiet listening and intimate storytelling.
Courtney Norman is a spatial designer specialising in the field of lighting installation and design. In 2011 she has presented her work Virtually Reality in the Lux Symposium at Massey University. She will also be preparing a series of lighting ‘interventions’ along Wellington Waterfront over the course of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Auckland Whispers will be developed from the installation of a sister work Wellington Whispers at The StageSpace in Wellington International Airport.
