Wellington 2021
Binge Culture Collective
A view of Wellington City from Kāpiti Island.
Be guided through the backstreets of Wellington in a ‘follow-film’ that combines city stroll with bush walk. A visually surprising and aurally lush solo experience that blurs what was, what is, and what could be. Take half an hour to immerse yourself in nature.
Binge Culture creatives Joel Baxendale and Oliver Devlin have collected masses of audio and video recordings from residency on Kāpiti Island to transport you to the lush reserve from right here in the city.
Journey along the paths of the original waterways of Te Whanganui-a-Tara (the original coastline and the now buried Waimapihi Stream) in this 27 minute video-walk that starts at The Opera House and takes you on an exploration of the various perspectives on the role of nature in urban environments - from the past and into the future.
These walks will be accesible via QR code and can be done at any time.
Binge Culture is a contemporary performance company based in Wellington. We experiment with ways to give the audience real stakes in each performance, rooted in physical space and the unedited moment, in order to empower people to critically engage with the complexity and absurdity of the world.
Since 2008 we have created over 25 works that subvert theatrical conventions through post-dramatic, durational and site-specific performance and the innovative use of audio and digital platforms. We have received several awards, including Most Original Production at the Wellington Theatre Awards, and critical acclaim from the likes of the NZ Herald, which said "Binge Culture strengthens its reputation as one of the country's most exciting, direct and original theatre companies."
We have toured throughout NZ and internationally, including to La MaMa in New York. At Edinburgh Fringe 2017 we were shortlisted for a Total Theatre Award for Innovation, Experimentation & Playing with Form.
Joel Baxendale is the Creative Director of Binge Culture. He has directed, produced and performed in shows that have toured nationally and internationally, including the company’s six-stop US tour in 2015, and triple bill to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2017. He has three times been awarded the STAB/STAB Lab commissions by BATS Theatre. Recent directing credits include ‘Yorick!’ (Q Theatre, 2018), ‘Watch Party’ (ATC - Here & Now Festival 2019), and ‘Werewolf’ (2020).
Oliver Devlin is a theatre-maker and musician. He graduated from the NZSM in 2016 with First Class Honours, winning the John Young Award for Electroacoustic Music twice. He has twice been nominated for a Wellington Theatre Award for sound design, and won in 2016. He has worked on a podcast series for RNZ, with Te Papa on audio guides for their ‘Terracotta Warriors’ and ‘Toi Arts’ exhibitions, and on the recent season of ‘The Witching Hours’.
