Prophetic Visions

Wellington 2021

Dilohana Lekamge

During times of uncertainty, looking through the lens of futurism can allow optimistic and utopian narratives to flourish. Instead of relying on another planet to house these possibilities, connecting to the histories of cultures that are housed by our earth can create a form of time travel that favours the survival of larger collectives. Prophetic Visions is an exhibition that imagines a variety of these alternative futures, including works by artists who utilise
elements of a community’s foundations to manifest a wider vision. This idea is echoed in the 2021 Performance Arcade’s vision of exhibiting NZ artists and embracing the works of artists who need to make themselves at home here for the foreseeable future due to the global pandemic. This exhibition will include works by Bepen Bhana, Ayesha Green, Sione Monu, Kahurangiariki Smith, Ashleigh Taupaki, Kalisolaite ‘Uhila, Christopher Ulutupu, Aliyah Winter, Dilwin Santos and Rafael/a Luna-Pizano.

Dilohana Lekamge is a writer, artist and curator based in Pōneke.
