Wellington 2021

The Metamorphosis Artists: Kia Jewell

During lockdown there was a surge in the interest of making short dance videos on the app TikTok. What if we bring the dances from outside our lockdown bubble living rooms to the bustling streets of Wellington? We will be holding short sessions that aim to teach a 15-30 second TikTok dance which is easy and fun to learn and film. Our aim is to get people moving in different groups in the city while also using forms of dance that are relevant and recognisable to the general public because of their appearance in mainstream media.

Kia has trained in ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary and hip hop. In 2016 Kia started full time training as a contemporary major at the New Zealand School of Dance. During her time at NZSD she performed in works by Damien Jalet and Lauren Langlois. Kia graduated in December 2018. In 2019 Kia worked with Java Dance Theatre on the production ‘Chocolate’ which premiered in Wellington. She then performed alongside the company in ‘Chocolate’ and ‘Back of the Bus’ at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In September 2019 Kia moved to Brussels and took up a place at P.A.R.T.S, the school of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.

Due to Covid-19 Kia returned to New Zealand in March and has since worked with Java Dance Theatre on The Metamorphosis Project. She recently performed with House of Sand in an improvised performance entitled ‘Dance. Dance. Have Feelings.’ This formed part of the 2020 NZ Improv Festival.
